5-Minute Breathing Exercise to Transform Your Day
A simple breathing practice you can keep anywhere, before meetings, in traffic, at the edge of sleep.
The breath is the only door to the nervous system that you can open with your own hands. Five minutes sounds like nothing and that is exactly why it works. Nobody is too busy for five minutes, so the practice never becomes another source of guilt.
The practice: 4–2–6
Sit or stand with your spine long but not rigid. Inhale through the nose for a count of four, hold softly for two, and exhale through the mouth for six. The long exhale is the medicine: it tells the body, in its oldest language, that the tiger has gone.
- Inhale for 4 counts, gently through the nose.
- Hold for 2, no tension, just a pause.
- Exhale for 6, slow and complete.
- Repeat for five minutes, or ten rounds.
Where to keep it
Attach the practice to something that already happens: before you open your email, at the red light you always hit, while the kettle boils. A practice with a home survives; a practice floating in good intentions does not.
Five minutes of breathing will not fix your life. It will fix the next hour, and the next hour is where life actually happens.
Do it tired. Do it distracted. Do it while your mind is elsewhere. The breath does not ask if you showed up perfectly, it only asks that you showed up.
